A little summit experience with a great panoramic view at the Valparola Pass near San Cassiano: between old trenches and Dolomite flora you can immerse into nature and history

Short, but not to be underestimated is this small summit tour on the 2.477 m high Sas de Stria (Hexenstein, in German) above the passes of Valparola and Falzarego. The parking space at the top of the Valparola pass, just after the Forte Tre Sassi War Museum, is the starting point of the tour. We follow the signpost "Sas de Stria". The path leads through rocky terrain for about one kilometre and ascends about 290 metres in altitude. The route, which is only suitable for experienced mountain hikers, follows an old wartime path. In some places there are fixings (ladders, steel cables) to make it easier to move forward.
The path actually knows only one direction: Upwards towards south. Through crevices, ditches and caves we finally reach the summit, which opens up the view over Falzarego and the area of Livinallongo at the Col di Lana. The descent follows the same route. What did we like best? The dolomite rock formations, the view on the surrounding mountains, the World War open-air museum and the alpine flora in its great diversity. The Sas de Stria (literally "Witch Stone") is named after an old legend that says that a witch lived on its summit.
