The Maratona dles Dolomites has become the dream of every ambitious cyclist. Its first edition traces back to the 1980s, when only 166 athletes took place in this event. Today, however, every year thousands of cyclers take part, so that the number of participants had to be limited to 9,000 - half of the starting places are booked for Italian cyclists, the other half for the other nations.
After the early morning-start in La Villa, the marathon leads into the heart of the Dolomites, overcoming a multitude of bends and up to 7 Dolomite passes in a unique and breathtaking landscape. There are three distances to choose from:
* Sellaronda Course
Distance: 55 km
Altitude difference: 1,780 m
Mountain passes: 4 (Passo di Campolongo, Passo Pordoi, Passo Sella, Passo Gardena)
* Medium Course
Distance: 106 km
Altitude difference: 3,130 m
Mountain passes: 6
* Maratona Course
Distance: 138 km
Altitude difference: 4,230 m
Mountain passes: 7
4:23:31 is the official record on the 138 km long Maratona Course (2006, Negrini Emanuele). Every year more than 1,000 volunteers and many spectators cheer the athletes on. The "Maratona dles Dolomites" Dolomite Marathon is organised by the eponymous organising committee, which every year presents a charity project.
