The Vallon Peak, located in the central eastern part of the Sella Group, gives its name to the mountain hut at its feet - in fact, the full name of the Rif. Kostner hut at 2,500 m a.s.l. is “Rifugio Franz Kostner al Vallon”. Near the mountain hut there is a small lake, called Lake Vallon.
Also the Vallon Via Ferrata, classified as C, bears the name of the 2,906 m high peak. The via ferrata starts at the Forcella del Vallon wind gap at 2,500 m a.s.l. and leads to the top of Mt. Piz Boè, the highest elevation of the mighty Sella Group.
In winter, however, the Vallon Peak becomes a popular destination for ski tours. The 5-hour tour starts in the Val di Sole valley in the Trentino and snakes its way through the Val Persa valley and via the so-called Hell Hole (Buca del Diavolo) to the 2,906 m high summit. The downhill ride follows the ascent route. By the way: the Vallon area is one of a few starting points for paragliding flights - if you would like to see the Alta Badia from another perspective.
