Actually San Cassiano, called San Ćiascian in Ladin, belongs to the municipality of Badia and is situated at the feet of the imposing rock faces of Mt. La Varella, Mt. Piz Cunturines and the mighty Lagazuoi. Already for a long time San Cassiano is a favoured holiday destination for hikers and alpinists, who seek the challenge of scaling the rugged rock faces of the Dolomites in this area. But there are of course also easier hiking paths: the Pralongià High Plateau - in winter the heart of the Alta Badia ski resort - is accessible in some minutes by the Piz Sorega Funicular starting from the village.
In winter, this fairytale-like scenery is perfect for skiers, cross-country skiers and winter sport enthusiasts alike. Thanks to the gondola lift, starting directly from the village, you can enjoy skiing in the Alta Badia Skiing Area. It offers access to the Gran Risa World Cup-slope as well as to the famous Sella Ronda, the ski circuit round the Sella alpenstock. Also gourmets are warmly welcome to San Cassiano.
Absolutely worth seeing is the tunnel on Mt. Lagazuoi: the entrance can easily be reached from the mountain station of the funicular. It is a mine tunnel blown up in 1917 which was restored in recent years. The 1 km long tunnel, the most daring gallery system ever realised during the Great War, enables visitors to see one of the most dramatic battle zones of the Mountain Warfare 1915-1918.
